<P>As usual, this year's Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival will feature more than 100 acts, including several reunited alternative-rock giants mixed in with some of the hottest acts touring today. The festival will take place on the weekend of April 25-27 in Indio, California, and be headlined by Jack Johnson, Jack White's Raconteurs, reunited bands the Verve and the Breeders, Death Cab for Cutie, My Morning Jacket and former Pink Floyd leader Roger Waters (who will perform <I>Dark Side of the Moon</i>).</P><P>Festival organizers also confirmed that they are launching a new event on the East Coast called All Points West Music & Arts Festival, a three-day event set for August 8-10 at Liberty State Park in New Jersey. No lineup or ticketing information has been announced for the event, which appears to be in direct competition with the Vineland Music Festival slated to launch in New Jersey this summer from the people behind Lollapalooza and England's Reading Festival.</P><P>Among the rarely touring acts performing over the course of the Coachella weekend are trip-hop legends Portishead, who are releasing their first album in more than a decade in April, as well as German techno pioneers Kraftwerk and long dormant English psychedelic rockers Spiritualized. The first night of the festival is packed with some of the best dance and alt-rock bands of the moment, including the National, Animal Collective, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Battles, Aesop Rock, Spank Rock, Santogold, Vampire Weekend, Black Lips, Rogue Wave and Architecture in Helsinki.</P><P>Saturday night's lineup is just as strong, with acts that include M.I.A., Cold War Kids, Café Tacuba, Rilo Kiley, Mark Ronson, Islands, Cinematic Orchestra, Jamie T, VHS or Beta, Bonde Do Role, Akron Family, MGMT, and the Bird and the Bee. <P>The ongoing situation between fans of the <a href="/news/articles/1674301/nickelback-detroit-lions-thanksgiving-game.jhtml">Detroit Lions and Nickelback</a> — which, for the uninitiated, involves the band's performance during the team's Thanksgiving game, an <a href="/news/articles/1673783/nickelback-detroit-fans-petition.jhtml">online petition</a> and the <a href="/news/articles/1674406/nickelback-detroit-lions-thanksgiving-united-way.jhtml">United Way</a> — is the kind of thing that practically lends itself to parody. So it's no surprise that the folks over at <a href="http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/5166240802/nickelback-responds-to-NFL-petition?playlist=featured_videos" target="_blank">Funny or Die</a> have decided to enter the fray, with a new video that actually stars the Canadian quartet.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Nickelback's 'Detroit Debacle' Was Perfect Spoof Material For Funny Or Die" id="vid:712985.id:1674723" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>Given the rather vehement acrimony the band has suffered thanks to the <a href="http://www.change.org/petitions/the-detroit-lions-replace-nickelback-as-the-halftime-show-for-the-thanksgiving-game" target="_blank">petition</a> (which, at last count, includes more than 75,000 signatures and messages like "Haven't the good people of Detroit been through enough?"), you'd probably be surprised to learn that, as soon as they were approached by FoD, Nickelback said yes to the spoof. Then again, they're the kind of band that is definitely aware of their public perception.</P><P>"They called us up. They said, 'This whole debacle that's going on in Detroit it just lunacy. We here in the comedy field think it's just perfect for making fun of, and if you guys would like to come down here ... ' " frontman Chad Kroeger told MTV News. "We're huge fans of Funny or Die and anything Will Ferrell is associated with — we're there. So we're like, 'Absolutely, we'd love to come and make fun of the whole thing and ourselves at the same time.' "</P><P>Of course, Nickelback will also be the first to admit that perhaps their acting skills aren't up to par. Which is why the only thing standing in the way of their Funny or Die clip's viral success may be Nickelback themselves.</P><P>"As soon as they get real actors to take our places, then it's going to be viral," guitarist Ryan Peake laughed.</P><P><iframe src="http://www.funnyordie.com/embed/5166240802" width="420" height="269" frameborder="0"></iframe></p>

Band will kick off Mylo Xyloto tour on April 17.

<P>They've teased us all year with spot festival dates, but beginning April 17 <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/coldplay/artist.jhtml" target="_blank">Coldplay</a> will launch their first proper North American tour in three years when they hit the stage in Edmonton, Alberta to promote their latest, <I>Mylo Xyloto</I>.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="MTV News Extended Play: Coldplay" id="id:1670995" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>With three Grammy nominations under their belt -- two for "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall" and one for "Paradise" -- the band will be on the road from April through August in the U.S. and Canada, currently slated to wrap things up at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota on August 11.</P><P>Before they pack up their road cases, they will drop the third single from the album, "Charlie Brown," which goes to radio later this month. They will also appear on the first-ever 90-minute episode of the world's longest-running live music TV series, <a href="/news/articles/1670853/coldplay-austin-city-limits-up-in-flames.jhtml">"Austin City Limits"</a>.
 They'll ring in the new year on the program, which will air on PBS station nationwide on December 31 beginning at 11 p.m. "Coldplay New Year's Eve: An Austin City Limits Special" can also be viewed on demand on www.pbs.org starting at 11 p.m. ET that evening.</P><P>If you didn't get a chance to catch any of Coldplay's festival appearances earlier this year, singer Chris Martin promises that the new <I>Xyloto</I> songs will fit in with their soaring catalog, but might also feel a bit ... different. "It's definitely a schizophrenic album ... it keeps changing sounds," he told MTV News. "That's why we called it such a strange thing, <I>Mylo Xyloto</I>. Pop Queen's inclusion of lines from her 'She's Not Me' makes medley seem more like dig than tribute.

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/madonna/artist.jhtml">Madonna</a>'s diva rivalry with <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a> may be taken up a notch when her <i>MDNA</i> tour kicks off Thursday at Tel Aviv, Israel's Ramat Gan Stadium. In <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ToQnu34QygU#!" target="_blank">new rehearsal footage</a>, the 53-year-old legend is seen singing a mashup of her "Express Yourself" and Gaga's "Born This Way" that concludes with a few lines from Madonna's copycat-shaming "She's Not Me."</P><P>Last year, when Lady Gaga released her hit single "Born This Way," controversy erupted over the song's similarity to Madonna's "Express Yourself." (Never mind that much of the <a href="http://digitaljournal.com/article/317821" target="_blank">resemblance is rooted</a> in <i>both</i> songs' use of a pretty common disco chord progression.) At first, things seemed cool between the two singers. They'd always gotten along publicly, and <a href=http://www.popeater.com/2011/02/15/lady-gaga-madonna-loves-born-this-way/ target="_blank">Gaga told Jay Leno</a> that M's camp reached out to say all was well in the diva-verse with regard to the songs' similarities (something later denied by Madonna's people).</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Madonna - "Express Yourself"" id="vid:13328" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>The whole thing appeared to have blown over until earlier this year, when Madonna was promoting her movie "W.E." and her Super Bowl halftime performance during an ABC News interview. <a href="/news/articles/1677260/madonna-lady-gaga-born-this-way.jhtml">Madonna was asked</a> what she thought of the comparisons, and in response she called Lady Gaga "reductive."</P><P>Gaga's been pretty quiet throughout, but it's hard not to wonder if she'll stay that way once word of this latest swipe makes its way to her ears. (Gaga is currently in Asia on her <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2012/05/02/lady-gagas-born-this-way-ball-stage-biggest-ever-built-to-tour/">Born This Way Ball</a> tour, and she was recently forced to cancel a planned show in Indonesia after <a href="/news/articles/1685564/lady-gaga-islam-threat-indonesia-concert.jhtml">receiving threats</a> from fundamentalist Islamic groups in the country.)</P><P>New leaked footage from rehearsals for Madonna's own road show showcases <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2012/05/14/madonna-mdna-tour-set-list/">a reportedly planned mashup</a> of "Express Yourself" and "Born This Way," and while the resemblance between the two songs remains as striking as ever, that's not the real story. Just those two songs layered together could have been fun: The two stars certainly have overlapping fanbases, who no doubt would have delighted in the winking acknowledgement of M's influence on Gaga. But Madonna complicates things by concluding the medley with a few lines from her <i>Hard Candy</i> track "She's Not Me," a song about Madonna being emulated by another woman.</P><P>The inclusion of "She's Not Me" makes the medley seem like yet another scathing dig at Gaga. It's unknown whether Madonna was just goofing around during rehearsals or whether she plans to include that final digging refrain throughout her tour.</P><P><i>Is Madonna taking things too far, or are we misreading things? Can <i>anyone</i> stand in their way? Probably not, but let's take a look at all the opening-round matchups.</P><P><b>#1 Mumford & Sons vs. #16 F---ed Up</b>: It's the plaintive pluckers versus the brutal bruisers in round one, as top-seeded Mumford take on the always dangerous F---ed Up. Despite the impassioned pleas (and <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/leftfordamian/status/179222794826027008" target="_blank">inspired trash-talk</a>) of F---ed frontman Damian Abraham, Mumford have dominated this one from the get-go and appear poised to waltz on to round two.</P><P><b>#2 Coldplay vs. #15 Arctic Monkeys</b>: Given Coldplay's run of MMM disappointments (they've made it out of the first round <i>once</i>), perhaps this one shouldn't surprise us, but, <i>dang.</i> Thanks to the surprisingly fervent support of their fans, it's the Arctic Monkeys who hold the lead, though their grasp on victory seems to be slipping by the hour, as Coldplay rallies to close the gap. Who advances? We think this one is headed for upset city, and we're taking the Monkeys to move on.</P><P><b>#3 Florence and the Machine vs. #14 Refused</b>: Florence Welch may not be the only female to advance to round two (especially given Paramore and Evanescence's early successes), but she might be the most unlikely. The selection committee believed that reformed Swedish punks Refused would take the upset here, but given Flo's massive lead, well, perhaps we were mistaken. She's a lock to advance at this point.</P><P><b>#4 Muse vs. #13 Gym Class Heroes</b>: Muse made it to the Sweet 16 last year before running into the buzzsaw that is Tokio Hotel. They're at least going to make it to the second round this year, as they hold a commanding lead over a surprisingly sleepy GCH. Still, with Tokio lurking in round two, we wouldn't hold out much hope for Muse's return trip to the land of 16. But, for one week at least, they're a lock.</P><P><center><a href="http://www.mtv.com/content/news/2012/musical_march_madness_2012/"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/shared/promoimages/news/m/mmm_2012/bracket_promos/420x265.jpg"></a><br> <a href="http://www.mtv.com/content/news/2012/musical_march_madness_2012/"><b>Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket!</b></a></center></P><P><b>#5 Arcade Fire vs. #12 Tokio Hotel</b>: Speaking of TH, let's just say they're looking tough, currently pasting Arcade Fire by an historic margin (at last count, more than 144,000 votes). Perhaps it would have been best for Win Butler and company to just have skipped this year's tourney altogether. Watch out for Team Kaulitz.</P><P><b>#6 Fun. vs. #11 Semi Precious Weapons</b>: Now this one could be interesting. Still, there <i>is</i> time, and we wouldn't discount the power of the Fueled by Ramen social squad just yet (hint, hint).</P><P><b>#7 The Shins vs. #10 Coheed and Cambria</b>: Uh, yeah ... this one was pretty much over from the minute the MMM bracket was unveiled, and right now, thanks to their (beyond driven) Children of the Fence, Coheed are up big. Perhaps their only challengers in this bracket are Tokio Hotel, who loom in the Elite 8. It should be a worthy sequel to their now-infamous Final Four tilt in 2010, which Coheed eked out on their way to the title.</P><P><b>#8 Radiohead vs. #9 Bruce Springsteen</b>: Sort of like pitting Duke vs. North Carolina in the opening round, this one has two legendary bands battling it out. And not surprisingly, it's been one of the closest competitions of MMM, with both sides exchanging the lead. Right now, it's Radiohead by roughly 1,700 votes, though this one will certainly come down to the wire. 'You will always remember where you were ... when you heard the news,' Simon Cowell says, echoing the sentiments after Jackson's death.

<P>Few people will forget where they were when they heard that the King of Pop, <a href="/news/articles/1614744/michael-jackson-dies-at-50.jhtml">Michael Jackson, had died</a> in June 2009. And now, the same can be said for 1980s and '90s <a href="/news/articles/1679029/whitney-houston-dead.jhtml">Queen of Pop Whitney Houston</a>.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Celebrities React To Whitney Houston's Passing" id="vid:733106.id:1679030" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>The beloved, long-suffering singer died Saturday inside a Beverly Hills hotel room, hours before she was expected to attend a <a href="/news/articles/1679046/whitney-houston-dies-grammys-clive-davis.jhtml">pre-Grammy Awards party thrown by her longtime mentor Clive Davis</a>.</P><P>And while the official cause of death is yet unknown — what's been speculated so far is that <a href="/news/articles/1679049/whitney-houston-dies-details.jhtml">Houston may have drowned</a> in the bathtub after taking prescription drugs, including Xanax — given her very public struggle with substance abuse, depression and anxiety over the past decade, it's hard not to conclude that some drug- or alcohol-related accident may have been to blame.</P><P>It's much like, most recently, British singer Amy Winehouse and the late, great Michael Jackson before her, who died after taking a fatal cocktail of propofol and two other drugs. Also like Jackson, Houston's sudden death — at the age of 48 — has stopped the world in its tracks, an enormous, one-of-a-kind musical flame forever extinguished.</P><P>Even Jackson's brother, Jermaine — who was first introduced to Houston years ago by Clive Davis at the same Beverly Hills Hilton where the singer passed away — could not help but draw the comparison. In an interview with CNN overnight, he paid tribute to the two fallen musical giants. "They shared a lot of success in the late '80s and they were great friends," he said. "I'm happy and honored to have been a part of their lives."</P><P>And oh, what lives they led: Like Jackson — who died at just 50 years old, after years of struggling with personal demons — Houston, too, had an intensely profound and everlasting impact on the world of entertainment.</P><P>Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson and countless other chart-topping entertainers have all name-checked her as their musical mentor, icon and inspiration: To date, she is one of the best-selling artists of all time, with more than 170 million albums, songs and videos sold.</P><P>In her lifetime, Houston achieved what precious few of them have or ever will — stacking an astonishing 415 awards, including six Grammys, two Emmys, 22 American Music Awards, 30 <i>Billboard</i> Awards.</P><P>Her voice, in its prime, was a national treasure.</P><P>"X Factor" mastermind Simon Cowell may have summed it up the best: On "Piers Morgan Tonight," he said, "She was one of the greatest voices in our lifetime. Whitney was the number one singer that other singers want to emulate. People like that can't be manufactured. Kelly Clarkson's Stronger comes in at a distant #2.

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/coldplay/artist.jhtml">Coldplay</a> can be as self-deprecating as they want, but the fact remains that they are one of the biggest rock bands in the world. They proved it when their fifth album, <a href="/news/articles/1672756/coldplay-mylo-xyloto.jhtml"><I>Mylo Xyloto,</I></a> moved more than 447,000 copies in its first week on the charts, according to Nielsen SoundScan, notching the third-highest <I>Billboard</I> 200 debut of 2011 behind Lady Gaga and Lil Wayne. In a testament to their chart prowess, in addition to snagging their third consecutive #1 debut, the band's previous four albums are back on the charts as well, down in the mid-50s and 60s.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="MTV News Extended Play: Coldplay" id="id:1670995" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>The group has referred to <a href="/news/articles/1673060/coldplay-mylo-xyloto-schizophrenic.jhtml"><i>Mylo Xyloto</i></a> — which features a cameo from <a href="/news/articles/1672622/coldplay-rihanna-princess-of-china.jhtml">Rihanna on "Princess of China"</a> — as "schizophrenic" thanks to the wide range of sounds it explores.</P><P>Coldplay's first-week showing was more than enough to keep <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/clarkson_kelly/artist.jhtml">Kelly Clarkson</a> from hitting the top of the charts in the debut week of her <a href="/news/articles/1673070/kelly-clarkson-stronger-title-interview.jhtml">latest album, <I>Stronger,</I></a> which is a distant #2 on sales of 163,000.</P><P>Clarkson is back doing what she does best on the disc: writing awesomely powerful <a href="/news/articles/1673554/kelly-clarkson-stronger-mr-know-it-all.jhtml">pop breakup anthems</a> like <a href="/news/articles/1670027/kelly-clarkson-mr-know-it-all-single.jhtml">"Mr. Know It All."</a> She told MTV News that she particularly likes that "feisty" single, since it is so "in your face."</P><P>Crooner <b>Michael Bublé</b> is right behind at #3 with <I>Christmas</I> (141,000), with country rabble-rouser <b>Toby Keith</b> landing at #5 with <I>Clancy's Tavern</I> (69,000) and grave-voiced troubadour <b>Tom Waits</b> close on his heels at #6 with <I>Bad as Me</I> (63,000).</P><P>The rest of the top 10: <b>Adele</b>, <I>21</I> (#4, 107,000), <b>Scotty McCreery</b>, <I>Clear as Day</I> (#7, 42,000), <b>Lady Antebellum</b>, <I>Own the Night</I> (#8, 31,000), <b>Tony Bennett</b>, <I>Duets II</I> (#9, 31,000) and <b>Casting Crowns</b>, <I>Come to the Well</I> (#10, 30,000).</P><P>Though <a href="/news/articles/1673591/zooey-deschanel-death-cab-for-cutie-ben-gibbard-split.jhtml">actress/singer Zooey Deschanel</a> may have a blue Christmas on the heels of her split from <a href="/news/articles/1621934/zooey-deschanel-death-cab-cuties-ben-gibbard-married.jhtml">husband Ben Gibbard</a> of Death Cab for Cutie, she can take some solace that her holiday album with side project <b>She & Him</b>, <I>A Very She & Him Christmas,</I> lands at #12 on sales of 29,000.</P><P>It was a rougher week for <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/evanescence/artist.jhtml">Evanescence</a>, whose <a href="/news/articles/1672356/evanescence-family-values.jhtml">self-titled third album</a> fell hard in its third week, losing 45 percent from the previous cycle as it drops nine spots to #13 on sales of 22,000.</P><P><b>Boyz II Men</b> make a comeback to the charts, landing at #20 with, appropriately enough, <I>Twenty</I> (18,000), while the week's most drastic plunge comes from alt rock veterans <b>Jane's Addiction</b>, whose <I>The Great Escape Artist</I> shed 74 percent of its first-week business, and 55 chart spots, to land at #67 (6,000).</P><P>The top should get a reshuffle again next week when <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a>'s <a href="/news/articles/1673532/justin-bieber-mistletoe-boyz-ii-men.jhtml"><I>Under the Mistletoe</I></a> debuts, alongside the second album from former reality show star <b>Susan Boyle</b> and albums from <b>Miranda Lambert</b>, <b>Florence and the Machine</b>, <b>Wale</b> and <b>Lou Reed</b> and <b>Metallica</b>'s controversial hookup, <I>Lulu.</I></P><P><div style="background-color:#000000;width:460px;"><div style="padding:4px;"><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:706896/cp~id%3D1673542%26vid%3D706896%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A706896" width="460" height="263" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="." flashVars=""></embed></div></div></p>

Patrick Carney blames the band for ruining rock and roll in interview with Rolling Stone.

<P>Having already spent a portion of 2011 <a href="/news/articles/1665300/lady-gaga-black-keys.jhtml">taking Twitter shots at Lady Gaga,</a> <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/black_keys/artist.jhtml">Black Keys</a> drummer Patrick Carney is kicking off 2012 with another feud ... only this time, he's setting his sights on Nickleback.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="The Black Keys 'Scrapped' The Original 'Lonely Boys' Video" id="vid:718827" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>In the new issue of <a href=http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/cover-story-excerpt-the-black-keys-20120104" target="_blank"><i>Rolling Stone,</i></a> Carney laments the current state of rock music (which, admittedly, is rather dire) and places the blame squarely on the shoulders of the Canadian quartet, whom he believes have ruined the genre with their "watered-down, post-grunge crap."</P><P>"Rock and roll is dying because people became OK with Nickelback being the biggest band in the world," he says. "So they became OK with the idea that the biggest rock band in the world is always going to be sh--. Therefore, you should never try to be the biggest rock band in the world. F--- that! Rock and roll is the music I feel the most passionate about, and I don't like to see it f---ing ruined and spoon-fed down our throats [with] this ... horrendous sh--. When people start lumping us into that kind of sh--, it's like 'F--- you,' honestly."</P><P>Maybe he hasn't heard <a href="/news/articles/1673594/nickelback-bottoms-up-here-and-now.jhtml">"Bottoms Up."</a> Of course, in the interview, Carney was equally harsh on himself, saying he "suck[s] at the drums" and admitting that he agrees with most folks who call him awkward. But the most savage of his criticisms are definitely directed toward Nickelback. (A spokesperson for the band did not respond to MTV News' request for comment.) We may be witnessing the birth of our first great rock feud.
