<P>To look at her, you'd think <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/rey_lana_del/artist.jhtml"_blank">Lana Del Rey's</a> inspirations come mostly from 1940s detective movies and sepia-toned Hollywood pinups. But the "Video Games" singer told England's Magic 105.4 that one of her big fashion and music icons is Britney Spears. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:724891.id:1677189" width="240" height="211"></div><p> "I'm not really interested in a ton of female musicians but there is something about Britney that compelled me — the way she sings and just the way she looks," Del Rey said. And even though she's just released her major-label debut under the Del Rey name, she added that she's already kind of over music-making. "The thing that makes me happy now isn't really singing," she said. "Music was once the be-all and end-all, but when you lose everything you have over and over again, it's not so important." It might be a bit early for her to bail on the whole music thing though, since her album, <I>Born to Die</I>, topped the iTunes album charts in 14 countries this week, including the U.S., U.K., Italy, France, Germany, Ireland and Mexico. The chart triumph — and a possible #2 debut next week on the <I>Billboard</i> albums tally — came despite a rash of negative or <a href="/news/articles/1678050/lana-del-rey-album-born-to-die-reviews.jhtml">middling reviews</a>
 of the album as well as the continuing fallout from her shaky <a href="/news/articles/1677389/lana-del-rey-snl.jhtml">"Saturday Night Live"</a>
 debut last month. The haterade has gotten her label boss, Interscope's Jimmy Iovine, to chime in on the flack his latest protégé has been taking. "It's a drag," Iovine told <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/lana-del-rey-backlash-jimmy-iovine-286378" target="_blank"><I>The Hollywood Reporter</I></a>. "Maybe this is a new sport. It's something we've never seen before. Or maybe it's [like] the Giants and the Jets." Del Rey herself told <I>Rolling Stone</I> that she thought she looked "beautiful" and sang "fine" on the show, saying that "that's just the way I perform, and my fans know that." Say what you want about Del Rey's looks, attitude and performance ability, but Iovine said there is one thing you can't mess with. Musically, he thinks <I>Die</I> is "really good. Great lyrics and great songs. I don't care what anybody says, 'Video Games' is a great song. When she sings that song, it moves me. It's how we signed her — she sang and it was beautiful. I think she's really talented. Period."</p>

<P>You kind of can't go wrong when the soundtrack you've put together for one of the most eagerly anticipated literary adaptations in years kicks off <a href="/music/artist/yeah_yeah_yeahs/artist.jhtml">Yeah Yeah Yeahs</a> singer Karen O's take on <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/led_zeppelin/artist.jhtml">Led Zeppelin</a>'s "Immigrant Song." </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:693384" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Fans heard the throbbing industrial take on the rock classic cooked up by former Nine Inch Nails mastermind and O when a trailer for the David Fincher-directed "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" leaked back in May. And on Thursday, Oscar-winning industrial-rocker-turned-film composer Reznor and musical partner Atticus Ross unveiled the full track list for their "Tattoo" score album. The follow-up to their award-winning "The Social Network" score was a labor of love, according to a <a href="http://nin.com/?id=102677" target="_blank">post</a> Reznor put up on the NIN site on Thursday announcing the disc. "For the last fourteen months Atticus and I have been hard at work on David Fincher's 'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,' " he wrote about the American version of the tale of pierced and punished hacker <a href="/news/articles/1655879/rooney-mara-dragon-tattoo.jhtml">Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara)</a> and her muckraking journalist compatriot <a href="/news/articles/1667542/daniel-craig-rooney-mara-girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo.jhtml">Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig)</a>. "We laughed, we cried, we lost our minds and in the process made some of the most beautiful and disturbing music of our careers. The result is a sprawling three-hour opus." The album will be released on iTunes on December 9 in two versions. Right now, you can download the Karen O song on iTunes when you pre-order the 39-track album. Band's first Stateside shows in four years kick off in January.

<P>The <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/red_hot_chili_peppers/artist.jhtml" >Red Hot Chili Peppers</a> have announced their first run of U.S. shows in more than four years, in support of 2011's <a href="/news/articles/1669964/red-hot-chili-peppers-im-with-you-album.jhtml">(don't-call-it-a-comeback)</a> disc <I>I'm With You.</i> </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="id:1669172" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Currently in between runs of shows in the U.K. and Europe, the Peppers will return to the States for a trek that kicks off January 25 in Charlotte, North Carolina. So far, just six U.S. dates have been revealed, but according to a spokesperson for the band, more shows will be unveiled in the coming weeks. Tickets for the first six shows go on sale December 3. The 2012 arena tour will mark RHCP's first full-scale tour of the U.S. since 2007, when they wrapped their massive <i>Stadium Arcadium</i> jaunt — and subsequently went on hiatus — and their first with guitarist Josh Klinghoffer as a full-fledged member of the band. (He served as a backing musician on the <i>Arcadium</i> tour.) The Chili Peppers recently unveiled the Raymond Pettibon-influenced video for <a href="/news/articles/1674328/red-hot-chili-peppers-monarchy-of-roses.jhtml">"Monarchy of Roses,"</a> the second single off <i>I'm With You,</i> which was released in August and debuted at #2 on the <i>Billboard</i> 200, selling more than 229,000 copies. When <a href="/news/articles/1669340/red-hot-chili-peppers-im-with-you.jhtml">MTV News spoke to the band </a> on the eve of the album's release, they told us that, more than anything, they couldn't wait to take their new songs out on the road, especially since their handful of warm-up dates — including a headlining slot at Japan's Summer Sonic fest — had gone swimmingly. "It's very dynamic, so we really have to focus on letting each song exist unto itself with all its beauty. There's a lot going on," frontman Anthony Kiedis said. "We felt pretty good about everything that we had done in terms of writing and recording, but no one really knew [how the warm-up shows would turn out] and it was just as good as one could have ever dreamt of ... It was like being 21 years old and not being able to sleep the night before a show." <P>One day after pop music <a href="/news/articles/1679035/whitney-houston-dead-celebrity-reaction.jhtml">lost one of its icons</a> and greatest voices, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/houston_whitney/artist.jhtml">Whitney Houston</a>, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyoncé</a> is opening up about the death of the pop superstar. She recalled meeting the singer for the first time 15 years ago, just as she was breaking into the industry herself. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="id:1679030" width="240" height="211"></div><p> "The loss of Whitney Houston is painful. I remember meeting Whitney for the first time when I was 15. She was the ultimate legend. The ultimate woman. Not only was she confident, poised, stunningly beautiful and intelligent, but she was sincere and kind," she said in a statement to MTV News. "She took the time to make everyone feel like they were very important to her." Beyoncé continued in the statement that Houston's killer vocal abilities helped make her the superstar she was. "I, like every singer, always wanted to be just like her. Her voice was perfect. Strong but soothing. Soulful and classic. Her vibrato, her cadence, her control. So many of my life's memories are attached to a Whitney Houston song," she said. "She is our queen and she opened doors and provided a blueprint for all of us. God bless her." Her statement comes on the same day that Houston will be remembered at the 2012 Grammy Awards. B's "Dreamgirls" co-star Jennifer Hudson will lead the <a href="/news/articles/1679040/whitney-houston-grammy-tribute.jhtml"> Grammy tribute to the late icon</a>, along with Houston's longtime friend and collaborator, Chaka Khan. <P>In a sea of A-list contributions for will.i.am's forthcoming solo album, the Black Eyed Peas mastermind recently dropped one name that will really get pop fans excited. Speaking with <a href="http://www.capitalfm.com/artists/william/news/britney-spears-alicia-keys-new-album/" target="_blank">Capital FM</a>, will teased that his <i>Femme Fatale</i> collaborator Britney Spears will make an appearance on the album, dubbed <i>#willpower.</i> </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:638813" width="240" height="211"></div><p> "I have a song with Alicia Keys — me, Alicia and Swedish House Mafia. I have a song with the Beats, which is pretty grand. Me and Shakira have been trying to finish the stuff we started, and me and Britney is really crazy," he said. "So we got a song with me, LMFAO and Eva Simons, a song with me and Busta Rhymes and Swizz Beatz — I got a whole other bunch of collaborations." Spears and will.i.am last worked together on "Big Fat Bass," a spacey, grinding party tune complete with clapping noises and some rapping from will himself. Their recording session was featured on the MTV special <a href="/news/articles/1660830/britney-spears-femme-fatale-previews.jhtml">"I Am the Femme Fatale."</a> There's been no word yet from will's camp about the song and whether this is a new track or if he will be including "Big Fat Bass" on the album. The rapper/producer's love for Brit is hardly anything new: He <a href="/news/articles/1662289/britney-spears-will-i-am-big-fat-bass.jhtml">gushed to MTV News about the pop princess</a> months after they recorded together. "[I discovered] her love for music. I never seen anyone, like, come alive, full of excitement and giggling and laughing behind the mic," will recalled to MTV News. "She was like a little kid when she was recording the song, and it just brought the whole atmosphere, it changed the whole atmosphere when someone really loves music. So it was great working with her." His latest single, "T.H.E (The Hardest Ever)," featuring Jennifer Lopez and Mick Jagger, dropped late last year. <i>#willpower,</i> which also features "X Factor" judge Nicole Scherzinger, will be released later this year. <i>What are you expecting from will and Brit's collabo? On Sunday night at the 2012 Oscars, "The Descendants" co-writer Jim Rash hit the stage with Alexander Payne and Nat Faxon to accept the award for Best Adapted Screenplay. They were handed their prize by Angelina Jolie, who had just turned heads in her breathtaking Versace black velvet gown, which featured one very sexy slit. To emphasize the look, Jolie had popped out her right leg; the move prompted a Twitter account made in the leg's honor and Rash's funny onstage parody of it, right next to Jolie.
Shortly after Rash imitated her stance at the show, he was asked what had moved him to do it. He laughed off the moment, telling The Hollywood Reporter, "I had just seen her pose and thought it was bold and fun. And you know what? We have exactly the same legs!
Really, it was a loving tribute and nothing but."
Faxon, who also sort of got in on the joke with his leg, said, "Angelina's supremely hot. There's no way to do anything but honor her."
Rash also spoke to EW.com about the moment, noting that he had decided to go there when producers told nominees that when multiple people accepted an award, only one person could give a speech.
"Honestly, as soon as I saw her pose like that, I was like, 'I'm going to do that,' " said the writer, who also plays Dean Pelton on "Community." "I knew Alexander was going to take the reins, so I was like, 'How can I make a moment?' — selfishly. I almost thought it was a little Dean Pelton, somehow. I was bringing it all together. Because I have stood like that [on 'Community']."
As of press time, the Twitter account (under the handle "Angies Right Leg") made in that leg's honor had yet to comment on the moment, but sure had plenty to say about its own glory over the course of 18 tweets. One of the final tweets simply noted, "You have to admit I'm one hell of a leg."

<P>In the days since <a href="/news/articles/1678741/mia-super-bowl-performance-fan-reaction.jhtml">M.I.A. hit the Super Bowl</a> stage and threw her middle finger up in the air, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/madonna/artist.jhtml">Madonna</a> has remained mum on the subject. Until now. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:731849" width="240" height="211"></div><p> The singer called into <a href="http://ryanseacrest.com/2012/02/10/madonna-says-m-i-as-digit-malfunction-was-a-teenager-irrelevant-thing-to-do-audio" target="_blank">Ryan Seacrest</a>'s radio show Friday morning and finally shared her sentiments on the rapper's naughty hand gesture and the headlines it made in wake of the show. Sarcastically calling it "punk rock," Madge said she didn't realize it happened until after she walked off the stage, noting that she couldn't keep track of everything that was happening while the performance was taking place. But, once she did find out, she wasn't amused by her "Give Me All Your Luvin' " collaborator's actions. "I was really surprised. I didn't know anything about it. I wasn't happy about it. I understand it's punk rock and everything, but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy and positivity; it seemed negative," she said. "It's such a teenager, irrelevant thing to do. ... There was such a feeling of love and unity there. What was the point? It was just out of place." She later added that despite the snafu she "was overwhelmed. I started crying. I felt an incredible sense of warmth, love, and support. To see an entire stadium light up like candles it was ... like a religious experience." Much like Madonna, fellow <a href="/news/articles/1678685/mia-super-bowl-middle-finger-cee-lo-green.jhtml">Super Bowl halftime performer Cee Lo Green</a> had no idea that M.I.A. had given the middle finger during the show. "Honestly, I did not hear anything about it," he continued. "There was no talk about it in the dressing room afterwards and we didn't stay long after the performance because it was honestly a relief we had had it done. So I didn't hear anything until I got up to do the morning show, 'Today.' And television is a very sensitive [thing]." With that controversy behind her, Madge is looking to the future. She's next set to start work on her world tour and shoot her video for the second <a href="/news/articles/1678009/madonna-mdna-masterpiece.jhtml"><i>MDNA</i></a> single, "Girls Gone Wild." As for those rumors that <a href="/news/articles/1678835/britney-spears-madonna-collab-mdna.jhtml">Britney Spears is on the track</a> she said, "No, it's just little, ol' me. 'In Memoriam' montage also pays tribute to Steve Jobs, Sidney Lumet, Jane Russell and more fallen stars.

Whitney Houston honored at the 84th Annual Academy Awards

Billy Crystal introduced this year's "In Memoriam" montage with personal, heartfelt words about two Academy Awards producers who passed away in 2011, one of whom was Laura Ziskin, who produced on films like "Spider-Man" and "As Good as It Gets."
Esperanza Spalding, backed by the Southern California Children's Choir, sang a restrained and powerful version of "What a Wonderful World" as the clips played. The audience was asked to hold their applause until after the montage concluded, which they respectfully abided by. This prevented the morbid "applause-meter" phenomenon of years past, which seemed to unwittingly measure one fallen industry person's popularity against another.
The montage included a number of producers, costume designers, sound technicians and other departed industry folks, in addition to writers, directors and film stars. Among those honored were Whitney Houston and Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who was awarded a posthumous Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy Special Merit Awards ceremony held in Los Angeles earlier this month.
The montage also included Jane Russell (who died shortly after last year's Academy Awards), Farley Granger (who starred in two Alfred Hitchcock films, including "Strangers on a Train"), Hal Kanter, Jackie Cooper (the former child actor who also famously played newspaper boss to Christopher's Reeve's "Superman"), Sidney Lumet (director of classic movies like "Serpico," "Network" and "Twelve Angry Men") and Oscar winner Cliff Robertson (best known to modern audiences as Spider-Man's Uncle Ben).
The "In Memoriam" at the 84th annual Academy Awards closed with a clip of Elizabeth Taylor as "Cleopatra."
